The Great Sunflower Showdown

Think you can grow the biggest, brightest, or most beautiful sunflower in town? Join the Great Sunflower Showdown—a fun, friendly competition open to all Bon Accord residents!

Show off your gardening skills and community pride while watching your sunflower reach for the sky. All entries will be photographed and shared on the Town of Bon Accord’s social media pages and website.

Cost: Free
Eligibility: Must reside in the Town of Bon Accord
Contest Entry Deadline: June 1, 2026

 

Contest Categories:

  1. Tallest Sunflower Plant

    • Measured from the base of the stem (not including roots) to the top of the head.

    • The flower head will be extended upright for accurate height.

  2. Biggest Sunflower Head

    • Measured as the diameter of the seed head (petals not included).

  3. Most Blooms on a Single Stalk

    • All individual blooms, including unopened heads, on one stalk, will be counted.

 

Official Rules:

  • One sunflower (plant) entry per category, per person.

  • The same sunflower may be entered into multiple categories.

  • Only one prize will be awarded per category.

  • Registration is required to participate.

  • Seeds will be available at the Town Office for pick up.

  • Any brand or variety of seed can be used if participants choose to buy their own.

  • Sunflowers must be grown outdoors and be live plants.

  • Sunflowers must be grown by the registered participant, not a commercial grower.

 

Prizes:
The winner from each category will receive a trophy and a 5"x7" photo of your winning sunflower.


Judging:

  • Judging will take place on September 12, weather permitting.

  • Judging will be completed by Bon Accord's Communities in Bloom volunteers.

  • Winners will be announced shortly after.
