Common red flags to watch out for (by phone or email contact):
- Pressure to act quickly or make an immediate decision
- Threats (arrest, fines, legal action, account closure)
- Being asked to provide or share personal information (name, address, birthdate, SIN, credit card or banking information, password, PIN or verification code)
- Being asked to pay for anything using gift cards, cryptocurrency or wire transfers.
- Contacted unexpectedly (contacted out of the blue by someone claiming to be from a trusted organization)
Tips:
- Contact the person or organization using a phone number or website you find independently
- Scammers rely on getting you to react before you have time to think or verify. Never let anyone rush you into making a decision
- Caller ID can be spoofed. Never rely on caller ID alone. Hang up and contact the organization directly using a verified phone number.
- Scammers don't always look or sound like scammers. They can be convincing, professional, friendly and claim to be from a trusted organization (by phone or email)
- Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Spelling mistakes, poor grammar and suspicious-looking emails are no longer reliable indicators. A scam can look completely legitimate. If any of the five red flags above apply: STOP & VERIFY
- Tell family, friends, neighbours and co-workers about your experience. You may prevent someone else from becoming a victim
